Nether

Chunky Move, Next Move

We’re exploring what rests inside the body, underneath the skin and how that can bubble up and come to the surface.

Nether by Lauren Langlois is an absurd vision of a future that is hurtling towards us. An exhilarating visceral labyrinth, where memory, the metahuman and technological obsessions collide. Performed by Lauren and James Vu Anh Pham, Nether is a response to societal constraints where physicality is presented as the last frontier of what it means to be human.

Reviews

Langlois toys with the grotesque and the beautiful, but what is most effective in this work is the way she uses the dynamic shifts between stillness and movement in unexpected ways.
– Jordan Beth Vincent, Sydney Morning Herald

Nether, choreographed and danced by Lauren Langlois with collaborator James Vu Ahn Pham, is a stunning, compressed and meticulous artwork… Nether is a highly polished work that displays a compressed economy in its choreographic language. The dancers are outstanding, and the entire vision draws the viewer into an easy suspension of disbelief.
– Susan Bendall, Dance Australia

This is a beautiful, ethereal piece, where the precision and integration of light and dance…creates an engaging, almost tantalising experience.
Weekend Notes

Langlois’ choreography – exploratory shuffles and clawing at their own bodies, staccato gestures that seem like a kind of neurosis – evokes creatures unfamiliar with their own bodies…Pham and Langlois’s extremely articulate bodies are riveting to watch…
Witness Performance

Langlois succeeds in creating an unusual and unique movement vocabulary that takes advantage of her and Pham’s highly articulate bodies.
– Rhys Ryan, Limelight
